Storage for Unix and Windows

The Unix and Windows hosting systems provide online storage for data as needed. Storage can be provided on SAN (storage area network) or locally attached storage, depending on the system, application, and storage required. Storage is provided in a RAID (redundant array of independent disks) configuration for reliability. CIT offers separately-priced options for disk storage and SAN provisioning services, and volume discounts for both disk storage and backup storage.

Types of Storage

You can choose either Tier 1 (Premium Storage) or Tier 2 (Standard Storage) for your applications. We can help you by recommending a storage option based on the requirements of your application.

Tier 1 (Premium Storage)

Tier 1 storage services are typically used to support large enterprise-level configurations. In general, Tier 1 storage provides more paths from disk to server and supports higher input/output rates compared to Tier 2 storage. Tier 1 storage also offers enhanced support for concurrent maintenance and live firmware updates resulting in less scheduled downtime for customers.

Allow two weeks for additional Tier 1 SAN storage provisioning. If you need expedited service, allow three days for provisioning.

Tier 2 (Standard Storage)

Tier 2 storage services are generally used for mid-tier storage needs.

Allow two weeks for additional Tier 2 SAN storage provisioning. If you need expedited service, allow three days for provisioning.

Additional Information

Refer to the CIT Unix Storage Allocation Guidelines for additional information on Unix storage.

High Volume Discounts

High Volume Discounts are available if you have large amounts of data. You can take advantage of high-volume discounts for both disk storage and backup storage. For fiscal year 2013, the high volume discount for disk storage starts at over five TB (terabytes) and the high volume discount for backup storage starts at over 100 TB. The discounted rate applies to the amount of storage above the thresholds specified in the rate table.

Basis for Billing

Server Storage (Standard and Premium Storage)

  • Unix Virtual Machines (Unix VMs)—An initial allocated amount of storage is part of the service.  Additional storage appears as a separate line item on the CIT bill. Refer to the CIT Unix Storage Allocation Guidelines for additional information on Unix storage.
  • Windows Virtual Machines (Windows VMs)— An initial allocated amount of storage is part of the service. Additional storage appears as a separate line item on the CIT bill.
  • Windows Service—The internal storage is part of the service offering . Additional storage (on the SAN) is allocated by request. We will bill you for the increased storage accordingly.
  • Unix Service – The internal storage is part of the service offering.  Additional storage (on the SAN) is allocated by request. We will bill you for the increased storage accordingly.
  • Multiple Oracle Environment (MOE)/Shared Oracle—allocated by request. We will bill you for the storage accordingly.

Other Services

  • Backup Storage
Unix and Windows backup storage charges are based on the actual usage.

  • NIH Filer (Windows)
NIH Filer storage is entirely based on allocation. All storage will appear as an additional line item on the CIT bill.

  • Shared SharePoint Server (Windows)

Backup and storage are based on the allocated size of the database and appear as a single charge on the CIT bill.

  •  Dedicated SharePoint Server Backup (Windows)

Backup storage is based on the actual usage of the database.

  • Shared SQL Server (Windows)

Backup and storage are based on the allocated size of the database and appear as a single charge on the CIT bill

  • Dedicated SQL Server Backup (Windows)

Backup storage is based on the actual usage of the database.
