About the Cyber Security Research and Development Center

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate established the Cyber Security Research and Development Center in March 2004. The Center provides support for the wide range of research, development, testing, evaluation, and transition activities of S&T’s Cyber Security Division. Among its many support activities, the Center identifies critical R&D needs, gaps, and agendas; provides innovation training for program-funded researchers; conducts program workshops and conferences; and leads collaboration initiatives for critical infrastructure sectors such as the finance and oil and gas sectors.

The Cyber Security Division, headed by Dr. Douglas Maughan, is the umbrella under which DHS’s cyber security R&D activities are coordinated and performed, and it works to create partnerships between government and private industry, the venture capital community and the research community.

The Center supports DHS’s responsibility to secure a substantial portion of our nation’s critical infrastructure (including information and telecommunications, transportation, postal and shipping, emergency services, and government continuity). As DHS does not own or control this infrastructure, it faces unique challenges related to technologies that must be developed and deployed in support of the DHS mission.

SRI International, an independent, nonprofit research institute, provides technical, managerial, and administrative support for the Center. SRI is a leader in information security research and the creation of innovative business models and partnerships.

SRI is headquartered in Menlo Park, California (Silicon Valley), facilitating interactions with the private sector and venture capital community. SRI also provides offices and conference facilities in Arlington, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.).
