Major Benefits: Compensation and Pension. Eligible disabled veterans may also be entitled under certain conditions to a grant for special adapted housing or for an automobile or adaptive equipment for an automobile or other conveyance or for a clothing allowance. For wartime veterans with limited income discharged under other than dishonorable conditions after 90 or more days service, or separated from service earlier because of a service-connected disability and who are permanently and totally disabled from non-service connected disabilities, a non-service connected pension may be available. 2,578 veterans currently receive non-service connected pension benefits through the Reno VA Regional Office. VA benefits are available to eligible survivors of deceased veterans who were discharged under conditions other than dishonorable. This includes members of the Reserve or the National Guard who die while performing active duty for training. 2,215 dependents currently receive VA benefits through the Reno VA Regional Office. Certain benefits are also available to assist with the burial expenses of veterans, including two state operated veterans cemeteries. Vocational Rehabilitation & Counseling benefits offered to eligible disabled veterans are as follows: career counseling services; retraining benefits to include payment of tuition, books/supplies; and a monthly subsistence allowance, job placement assistance; and, follow-up after the veteran has secured employment. 741 disabled veterans are currently involved with Vocational Rehabilitation through the Reno VA Regional Office.
