NCMHD Loan Repayment Program

The NCMHD was mandated by Congress to develop a distinct loan repayment program to increase the pool of extramural researchers who conduct health disparities research. The NCMHD Loan Repayment Program (LRP) offers an educational loan repayment of up to $35,000 per year to qualified health professionals with doctorate degrees (e.g., M.D., Ph.D., Dr.PH.) who are employed in non-federal academic/research settings and are able to conduct two years of health disparities or clinical research. This program offers two distinct extramural loan repayment opportunities:

▪ The NCMHD Loan Repayment Program for Health Disparities Research supports health professionals that engage in basic, clinical, behavioral, social sciences or health services research addressing health disparities; and

▪ The NCMHD Extramural Clinical Research Loan Repayment Program for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds supports health professionals from financially disadvantaged backgrounds that engage in clinical research.

Since its inception the NCMHD LRP has funded more than 1,200 doctorate level health professionals representing a variety of disciplines such as medicine, epidemiology, psychology, and health policy. These health professionals engage in research at least 50 percent of their time; investigating the understanding of specific diseases, conditions, and health issues applicable to health disparity populations. Approximately 70 percent of the LRP recipients are racial/ethnic minorities or from other health disparity populations.
