Executive Summary

The NCMHD Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI) Program focuses on building research capacity in predominantly minority-serving academic institutions that offer one or more associates, baccalaureate and/or master's degrees in the life sciences, behavioral sciences and/or other health related areas.  The RIMI program seeks to strengthen the integration of teaching and research at predominantly minority-serving academic institutions.

  • Purpose. The NCMHD Research Infrastructure in Minority Institutions (RIMI) is a P-20 funding opportunity issued by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, National Institutes of Health, solicits grant applications from minority-serving institutions that propose to build, improve, strengthen and/or enhance the research infrastructure and research training capacity of minority-serving institutions.  These RIMI grant applications must have a plan that is designed to establish a research capacity-building infrastructure program, with benchmarks, for training students and developing a cadre of clinical, biomedical and behavioral research scientists who possess the skills, knowledge and abilities to engage in leading edge research and innovative research training that ultimately will contribute to reducing and eliminating health disparities in the United States.
  • Mechanism of Support. This FOA will utilize the P-20 grant mechanism.
  • Funds Available and Anticipated Number of Awards. The total amount to be awarded under this funding opportunity is approximately $4 million (total costs) per year for an estimated four to five new and renewal applications.
  • Budget and Project Period. The total project period for an application submitted in response to this funding opportunity may not exceed five years.  Direct costs are limited to $420,000 annually for two-year institutions, and $650,000 annually for institutions that offer baccalaureate and masters degrees.  However, new applicants may apply for a one-time cost expenditure for renovations and alterations, up to $150,000 for four year institutions and up to $125,000 for two-year institutions.  Renewal applicants may apply for a one time cost expenditure for renovation and alterations up to $75,000 for four year institutions and up to $50,000 for two year institutions.
  • Eligible Institutions/Organizations. Institutions/organizations listed in Section III, 1.A. are eligible to apply.
  • Eligible Project Directors/Principal Investigators (PDs/PIs).  Eligible Principal Investigators must be a senior administrative official such as the President, Chancellor or Dean of the applicant institution.   
  • Number of PDs/PIs.  One.
  • Number of Applications. An applicant institution may not submit more than one application.
  • Resubmissions.  Resubmission applications are not permitted in response to this FOA.     
  • Renewals. Renewal applications are permitted in response to this FOA.
