The NCI Office of Advocacy Relations (OAR) works to engage advocates in various NCI activities. Since the Consumer Advocates in Research and Related Activities (CARRA) program began in 2001, OAR has typically received 100 requests per year for advocate engagement.  At NCI, advocate participation is requested for a wide range of activities, including NCI peer review panels, advisory boards, educational patient material review (such as brochures, websites, and videos), and steering committees.

In 2007 the Advocates in Research Working Group (ARWG) began work to craft recommendations on the most effective way for NCI to involve individual advocates in its activities. The final ARWG Executive Summary and Recommendations are now available.

NCI advocates form a highly qualified, pre-screened group of people. As they participate in a wide range of NCI activities, they represent the collective viewpoint of their cancer community.  Research advocates also play a critical role as two-way information links between their own cancer-related networks and the NCI.
