National Service: A Public-Private Partnership - Factsheet

The Corporation for National and Community Service is a vital supply line to America's nonprofit community, providing grants, volunteers, training, and other resources to help meet pressing needs in education, housing, the environment, public safety, disaster relief, and other areas.

Supporting America's Volunteer Sector From 2000 to 2006, the Corporation awarded more than $3.79 billion in Federal grants to tens of thousands of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, schools, and local government agencies to engage millions of Americans in service to their communities through Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America.

Leveraging Private Support From 2000 to 2006, the Corporation's grantees collectively raised more than $2.6 billion in non-Corporation matching funds–an average of $376 million a year. Overall, non- Corporation funds account for about 40 percent of total program budgets throughout the Corporation–an extraordinary testament to the value of national service.* Providing Education Opportunity In return for completing a term of service, AmeriCorps members earn an education award to pay for college. Since 1994, AmeriCorps members have earned more than $1.2 billion in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards.

AMERICORPS
Each year, AmeriCorps provides funds to support opportunities for 75,000 Americans to give intensive service to community groups working in education, the environment, public safety, and other human needs. From 2000-2006, AmeriCorps awarded a total of almost $2 billion in grants, and grantees matched almost $1.4 billion.

AmeriCorps State and National

• How It Works: More than threequarters of all grant dollars are awarded to local groups through Governorappointed state service commissions; the remaining quarter is awarded directly to national groups. Each grantee must match a set percentage of costs for operations and member support.
• Corporation Funds Awarded From 2000-2006: $1.7 billion

• How It Works: More than 1,200 nonprofit and faith-based groups engage 6,500 members each year in helping to meet the needs of people living in lowincome communities nationwide.

• Grantee Match: $48.3 million

SENIOR CORPS

Senior Corps taps the skills, talents, and experience of nearly 500,000 Americans age 55 and older to meet a wide range of community challenges. From 2000-2006, the three Senior Corps programs awarded a total of more than $1.4 billion in grants, and grantees matched more than $800 million.

• How It Works: The Corporation makes grants to support about 450,000 volunteers who serve in more than 65,000 local organizations. RSVP volunteers help local police departments conduct safety patrols, participate in environmental projects, provide intensive educational services to children and adults, and respond to natural disasters, among many other activities.
• Corporation Funds Awarded From 2000-2006: $371.8 million
• Grantee Match: $347.9 million Foster Grandparent Program
• How It Works: The Corporation makes grants to local agencies who support about 31,000 volunteers to mentor and tutor some 262,000 youth with special needs.
• Corporation Funds Awarded From 2000-2006: $741.2 million
• Grantee Match: $269.2 million Senior Companion Program
• How It Works: The Corporation makes grants to support 15,000 Senior Companions to help 57,000 frail, homebound, typically elderly clients remain independent in their own homes.
• Corporation Funds Awarded From 2000-2006: $304.0 million
• Grantee Match: $184.1 million

LEARN AND SERVE AMERICA
Learn and Serve America awards grants to state education agencies, schools, nonprofit groups, and institutions of higher education to engage more than 1.4 million students
each year in service activities linked to academic achievement. This type of learning, called service-learning, increases academic achievement while giving young people an "on ramp" to a lifetime of active citizenship.
