Curriculum for Addiction Professionals
Welcome to the Curriculum for Addiction Professionals (CAP): Level
1, an online course that is free to the public. This curriculum was developed
as a joint project of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration
(SAMHSA) Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Center for Excellence and the National
Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (NOFAS). This knowledge-based course provides
an overview of historical findings related to alcohol use by pregnant women, identification
and diagnosis of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, prevention and treatment methods,
and legal issues. The course includes six competencies that can be taken at your
own pace. After completing all six competencies, you may download and print a certificate
of completion.
This curriculum is intended for social workers, certified addiction counselors,
psychologists, psychiatrists, and others in the treatment and recovery field. Parents,
caregivers, and other family members may also find it helpful. Although the information
in this curriculum pertains primarily to working with women and women with children
in substance abuse treatment, some of the information also applies to adult men
and adolescents in treatment programs.
The Curriculum for Addiction Professionals (CAP): Level 1 is a prerequisite for
the classroom training, Level 2, which is skills based. The curriculum for Level
2 can be found on the FASD Center for Excellence Web site at
www.fasdcenter.samhsa.gov.
Each year, about 40,000 babies are born prenatally exposed to alcohol. The more
you know about the devastating effects of alcohol on these children, the more you
can do to help. We hope you find CAP: Level 1 useful,
