Report of the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Workshop on Perinatal and Childhood Stroke

September 18 and 19th, 2000
Bethesda, MD

Co-sponsored by National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the Office of Rare Disorders

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke and the Office of Rare Disorders sponsored an international workshop on perinatal and childhood stroke in Bethesda, MD. on September 18 and 19th, 2000. Topics covered included epidemiology, animal models, risk factors, outcome and prognosis, and areas of future research for perinatal and childhood stroke. A report summarizing this conference appeared in the January 2002 issue of Pediatrics. This report concluded that stroke in infants and children is an important cause of morbidity and mortality and an emerging area for clinical and translational research. Currently there is no consensus on the classification, evaluation, outcome measurement, or treatment of perinatal and childhood stroke. Research is needed on maternal, perinatal and childhood risk factors and on recurrence and outcome. This information is essential to identify significant areas for future treatment and prevention.
