Hazardous Materials & Pipelines

About

Because of the significant danger posed to the public from the illegal transport of hazardous materials, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) has made investigating hazardous material transportation violations one of its top priorities.

The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is responsible for coordinating a national safety program for the transportation of hazardous materials.  In addition to PHMSA, there are several other DOT Operating Administrations involved in hazardous material related matters including the Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Federal Railroad Administration.

Most criminal violations of hazardous materials regulations involve falsification and misrepresentation of documentation used to identify products being shipped.  In combating this serious safety problem, OIG Special Agents work with other Federal and state officials to investigate these matters and refer them to the Department of Justice for prosecution.
