“The information in the 'Web Browsers Brick' enabled us to save valuable time and resources during the project.  We didn’t have to research what browsers NIH was using and planned to use in the future.  And we didn’t have to bother the IT operations staff.  The research was already done for us and documented!”

- Web Project Manager

Case Study

The Office of the Chief IT Architect (OCITA) led a project to redesign the NIH Enterprise Architecture website in 2005. The Web development team was able to use the NIH Enterprise Architecture to ensure compliance with current and future Web browser standards.

Specifically, the team used the Web Browsers Brick as a benchmark for design, development, and testing. The baseline documented those browser technologies that were already in use at NIH. The team was also able to verify that their code would work for NIH users for the next several years, because they ensured that the strategic browser technologies were also supported.

The team was able to save time in arriving at its browser benchmark, because the information was already documented in the brick.  There was no need to conduct large scale, time consuming user surveys or to interview IT operations staff to determine the correct benchmark.
