How can I find out about job openings in my local community, as well as jobs in the federal government?

There are many ways for you to see who is hiring in your local community or find jobs with the federal government.  Try some of these quick tips to get you started:

Use Quick Search Job Search Engines

Conduct a quick search using some of the free job search engines (e.g., Indeed, Simply Hired or JobCentral).  Though not military specific, these search engines will allow you to search for opportunities by job title, key word and/or city/state/zip code.  These sites also provide additional resources to help you in your job search.

Veterans.jobs – http://www.veterans.jobs

Veterans.Jobs is a service of the DirectEmployers Association.  Veterans.jobs takes the Military Occupational Crosswalk one step further to assist military personnel transitioning from active duty to find direct employment opportunities in the civilian workforce.  Simply use the veterans.jobs website (or enter your MOC plus dot-jobs into your browser) to locate civilian occupations requiring the same or similar skills as your previous job in the military.  Geographical locations for these opportunities are also listed.
* Military spouses can also find positions available by base location at http://militaryfamily.jobs/.

Military to Federal Job Crosswalk – http://www.mil2fedjobs.com/index.htm

The Mil2FedJobs tool has been developed for the State of Maryland’s Department of Labor, Licensing, and Regulation (DLLR) with funding from the U.S. Department of Labor to support transitioning Service Members and Veterans in finding Federal job openings.  Although the tool has been developed by the State of Maryland, it can be used by anyone in any state

Feds Hire Vets – http://www.fedshirevets.gov

FedsHireVets was created in response to President Obama’s Executive Order 13518, Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government and the Veterans Employment Initiative.  This website is the Office of Personnel Management’s Government-wide Veterans Employment website.

  • The Job Seekers tab offers resources for Veterans, Transitioning Service Members, Family Members, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), Vets2Feds Career Development and a Calendar of Events.
  • The Agency Directory tab lists the Veteran Employment Program representatives responsible for promoting all aspects of Veterans' employment within their respective agencies.  Click on “view” next to the representative’s name to find current recruiting areas.
HELPFUL HINT:  While you are encouraged to email these federal representatives directly, it is recommended that you do not simply forward your resume.  Take the time to review the job descriptions (view them on USAJOBS for detailed information), and then be specific in your introductory email as to the position you are seeking and why your skills, abilities and interest would be valuable.
