GR181 - Searching for Science Using eRA's QVR and SPIRES

Description:

    Program Officials, Program Analysts & other?s interested in systematically searching for & analyzing scientific content. This class is designed to show you how to effectively use eRA modules to conduct scientific search & analysis. Topics to be covered include:

  • Identify important characteristics of your portfolio
  • Quickly identify projects in a particular scientific area
  • Locate discrete scientific areas that exist in your portfolio as well as gaps
  • Identify projects in other ICs that are similar to aspects of your portfolio
  • Determine if an RFA/PA is needed by finding out:
    • Are there other significant projects currently funded in the area of this RFA/PA?
    • Are there projects just beyond the payline that are in the scientific area of this RFA/PA?

    Learn how to sharpen the focus of an RFA/PA

    • View your portfolio through information graphics for a quick way to evaluate both funding & productivity (publications)

Objectives:

    The objective of this class is to learn how to effectively use QVR and SPIRES to conduct a scientific search and analysis. QVR is a tool to search, view and obtain reports with detailed information on grant applications and awards. SPIRES is a database containing NIH publications and mapping between publications and NIH research grants spanning 30 years.
