Maria Elena Martinez, Ph.D. has been a CRCHD K01 grantee for more than eight years. A professor of Epidemiology and Statistics at the University of Arizona, Arizona Cancer Center, she currently serves as director of the Center for Cancer Health Disparities.
This past April, Dr. Martinez chaired the Minorities in Cancer Research Council (MICR), a membership group within the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), at the national meeting of AACR in Orlando, Florida. MICR's mission is to prevent and cure cancer while promoting the careers of minority scientists. One of the goals of MICR is to address the cancer health disparities experienced by underserved populations. Dr. Martinez will also be participating in the upcoming AACR conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities, to be held September 18-21, 2011 in Washington, D.C.
Her long-term research interests are focused on advancing the understanding of the etiologic factors underlying cancer. More recently, she has narrowed her research to breast cancer in Hispanic/Latina women and is currently conducting a US-Mexico bi-national study of breast cancer, a poorly studied disease in this specific population.
