About VA Mobile Health

VA Mobile Health aims to improve the health of Veterans by providing technologies that will expand clinical care beyond the traditional office visit. It helps Veterans, Caregivers and the rest of the VA health care team securely coordinate all aspects of care, providing Veterans and their Caregivers with tools to help lead healthier lives.

As part of VA Mobile Health, VA will launch a variety of mobile solutions, including Apps and mobile-optimized websites to assist Veterans, Caregivers and clinicians. VA Mobile Health will address a range of health, management and administrative needs. Like its ground-breaking work in Electronic Health Records (EHR), VA Mobile Health underscores VA’s commitment to Veterans and dedication to using technology to improve care, coordination and convenience.

All Apps are secure and will protect Veteran health information. For more details, please contact mobilehealth@va.gov.

Benefits
  • Veterans will have access to information about their health conditions and treatment options, lifestyle tips, the ability to monitor their own health and find answers to their questions;
  • Caregivers will have access to organizational and time management tools, stress management tips, and tools to better coordinate care for their Veterans; and,
  • VA clinicians will have new resources for patient education and more opportunities to engage Veterans and Caregivers.
Who Are The Apps For?

VA Mobile Health will provide Apps for three distinct groups: Veterans, Family Caregivers and VA clinicians. Each set of Apps focuses on empowering users with the set of tools they need to facilitate, manage and organize their health care information, improve data sharing and increase the value of communication between Veteran patients and VA clinicians.

PE Coach

PE Coach is the first mobile app designed to support the tasks associated with prolonged exposure treatment for PTSD. Providing hip-pocket access to the necessary tools for successful PE participation, the app includes audio recording capability for easy playback after sessions; tools to support patient tasks between sessions; and visual displays of symptom reduction over time. In addition, PE Coach is integrated with smartphone calendar functionality to encourage patient recall and session attendance.

PE Coach will help providers and patients overcome certain barriers to PE implementation, dissemination, and adherence.

PTSD Coach

PTSD Coach was designed for Veterans and military Service Members who have, or may have, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This app provides users with education about PTSD, information about professional care, a self-assessment for PTSD, opportunities to find support, and tools that can help users manage the stresses of daily life with PTSD. Tools range from relaxation skills and positive self-talk to anger management and other common self-help strategies. Users can customize tools based on their preferences and can integrate their own contacts, photos, and music. This app can be used by people who are in treatment as well as those who are not. PTSD Coach was created by VA’s National Center for PTSD and DoD’s National Center for Telehealth & Technology.

PFA Mobile

PFA Mobile was designed to assist responders who provide psychological first aid (PFA) to adults, families, and children as part of an organized response effort. This app provides responders with summaries of PFA fundamentals, PFA interventions matched to specific concerns and needs of survivors, mentor tips for applying PFA in the field, a self-assessment tool for readiness to conduct PFA, and a survivors' needs form for simplified data collection and easy referral. PFA Mobile was created by VA's National Center for PTSD in partnership with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) and DoD's National Center for Telehealth & Technology.

Pilot Program

The VA Mobile Health Family Caregiver pilot is open to all Family Caregivers already enrolled in VA's Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers, which is specific to post 9/11 Veterans who have obtained U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) DS Logon credentials for the Veteran and his/her family member. These Family Caregivers will be asked to participate, and 1,000 will be randomly selected to receive iPads on loan from VA.

There will be four types of Apps available as part of the pilot: clinical, disease management, support for Caregivers, and health care management and tracking.
