Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Sessions. Four- or Eight-Week Session

Rotation Coordinator:
David George, MD

Rotation Description
The Laboratory of Clinical Studies of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism conducts a coordinated program of clinical research concerning the causes, consequences, and treatment of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. Depending on the needs and interests of each student, there are opportunities to participate in clinical research studies of patients, family members of alcoholics, and normal volunteers on a 10-bed inpatient ward.

Each student will join a senior investigator who will serve as the student's preceptor and who will provide supervision in clinical care and research activities. In addition to participating in the clinical and research meetings of the laboratory, the student may also be involved in the process of data analysis and manuscript preparation for on-going research studies.

Specific areas of research interest include the clinical pharmacology and biochemistry of alcohol, pharmacotherapy to reduce relapse in alcoholics in remission, clinical characterization and treatment of both acute and chronic alcohol withdrawal syndromes, pharmacogenetics of alcohol, and investigation of the neuropsychiatric consequences of alcohol abuse using neuropsychological, electrophysiological, and brain imaging methodologies.
