The work will involve conversion of cord blood stem cells to red blood cells. We will identify in vitro conditions to drive CD34+ stem cells towards the erythroid lineage and to ultimately produce red cells for transfusion. The manufactured red cells will be characterized through standard biochemical and flow cytometry assays for red cells and will be evaluated in vivo in an animal model of transfusion to determine the kinetics in circulation, organ distribution and capacity to deliver oxygen to tissues.

Qualifications Sought:

Experience in stem cell biology, tissue culture, flow cytometry, small animal handling and procedures.
