Substance Use Disorders

The number of adults in America with co-occurring serious mental illnesses and substance use disorders grew by one million people between 2003 and 2005. Individuals who have both a mental health and substance use problem often must cope with the effects of overlapping and compounding negative attitudes associated with mental illness and substance use problems.

Learning more about the unique needs of individuals who have co-occurring mental health and substance use problems can help them find appropriate treatment and also can reduce negative attitudes surrounding these health issues.
