Education/Training

The SAMHSA FASD Center for Excellence aims to provide our audience with education and training resources that incorporate the most up-to-date information available. To that end, the Center has developed several online and in-person training and technical assistance options, educational materials, and other resources for a variety of users.

Online Courses

FASD - The Course

This 7-module course provides information on the risk factors associated with FASD, the signs and symptoms of an FASD, FASD prevention techniques, and FASD treatment methods. It is designed mainly for primary and behavioral health care providers, social workers, educators, and other professionals who work with individuals who may have an FASD. Parents, caregivers, and family members may also find the information helpful.

Curriculum for Addiction Professionals (CAP): Level 1

The Curriculum for Addiction Professionals: Level 1 (CAP 1) is designed as a comprehensive training on FASD for everyone in the field of addiction, including social workers, certified addiction counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists. Through this curriculum, addiction professionals will learn how to apply information about FASD to their work in the substance abuse treatment system.

The SAMHSA FASD Center for Excellence offers an array of training and technical assistance services. In addition, FASD experts from the Center may be available to speak at your next conference or event.

Educational Materials

Curriculum for Addiction Professionals (CAP): Level 2

CAP 2 provides a skills-based training on the practical applications of the material learned in CAP 1. The course details ways to prevent, recognize, and address FASD, and provides a skills-based training on the practical applications of previously covered topics.

** Note: Level 1(above) is an online course; it is the prerequisite for Level 2. **

Tools for Success: Working with Youth with FASD in the Juvenile Justice System

Tools for Success is a training module to promote strategies for identifying needs and suggesting interventions for youths with FASD in the juvenile justice system. The curriculum is designed to help juvenile justice professionals intervene more effectively with young offenders who have FASD and who are identified as likely to engage in repeated criminal activity. Its target audience is professionals working in or with the juvenile justice system, including attorneys, judges, and other social workers.

FASD-The Basics

FASD – The Basics is an introductory PowerPoint presentation on FASD. The slides and accompanying notes provide the latest and most accurate information on FASD. The presentation is intended for a general audience.

Reach to Teach: Educating Elementary and Middle School Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Reach to Teach is a resource parents and teachers can use to educate elementary and middle school children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). It provides a basic introduction to FASD and provides tools to enhance communication between parents and teachers.

Recovering Hope: Mothers Speak Out About Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (video)

The "Recovering Hope" videos feature a series of women who tell poignant stories about alcohol use during pregnancy and its effect on their children. Their experiences are supported by expert clinicians and researchers who talk about disabilities associated with FASD and evaluation and intervention services.
