Director“s Welcome Message

Welcome to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.

The NIBIB is an Institute within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) devoted to merging the physical and biological sciences to develop new technologies that improve health. Our goal is to accelerate the pace of discovery and speed the development of biomedical technologies that prevent illnesses or treat them when they do strike.

Extraordinary scientific advances are giving us new tools to tackle challenging health problems. Sophisticated imaging techniques allow us to peer into the human body as never before. Recent developments in bioengineering promise to enhance the body’s natural ability to recover from injury and disease.

Unlike many other NIH institutes, the NIBIB’s mission is not limited to a single disease or group of illnesses; rather it spans the entire spectrum. We work with doctors from every field of medicine and bring together teams of scientists and engineers from many different backgrounds to develop innovative approaches to health care.

I invite you to explore our website to learn how the NIBIB is synthesizing the best ideas from the diverse fields of science and engineering to improve human health. For health care professionals and the general public, we offer information about our programs and links to additional sources of information. Investigators will find detailed information about our research areas and funding opportunities.

We hope you find our Website informative. We update this site regularly, and invite you to return. Please contact us at if you are unable to find answers to your questions. Join our Listserv if you would like to receive news and Web site updates via e-mail.

Thank you for your interest in NIBIB.
