Priorities

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) plans and sets priorities to ensure that we are responsive to new discoveries and opportunities, while making the best use of our resources. NCI works to integrate discovery activities through interdisciplinary collaborations, to translate research discoveries and oversee the development of interventions based on research findings, and to ensure the delivery of these interventions to all who need them.

The NCI Strategic Plan for Leading the Nation to Eliminate the Suffering and Death Due to Cancer

One major goal outlined in NCI's Strategic Plan is to overcome disparities across the cancer control continuum from disease prevention to end-of-life care by studying and identifying factors contributing to disparities, by developing culturally appropriate intervention approaches, and by disseminating interventions.

NIH Strategic Plan

In alignment with NIH's mission of "uncovering new knowledge that will lead to better health for everyone," NIH seeks to understand more about the causes of health disparities and the interventions that are most effective in eliminating them. Developed by minority group representatives and academic and healthcare professionals, the NIH Strategic Research Plan and Budget to Reduce and Ultimately Eliminate Health Disparities describes the NIH research, training, and outreach activities, both current and planned, that are involved in reducing and eliminating health disparities. The Strategic Plan represents NIH's assurance and commitment to the challenge.

Trans-HHS PRG Report

To overcome the unequal burden of cancer in our society, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is striving to develop new models and new partnerships among public health and clinical care systems, providers within these systems, and the diverse populations they serve. The Cancer Health Disparities Progress Review Group (CHD PRG) was developed to engage basic researchers, health care policy makers, providers, and consumers to assess system barriers and to actualize proven interventions for cancer prevention, early detection and diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and quality end-of-life care for all.
