Research Grants are defined as extramural awards made for Research Centers, Research Projects, Small Business Innovation Research(SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer(STTR) Grants, and Other Research Grants.

Research Grants are defined by the following activity codes:
R,P,M,S,K,U(excluding UC6),DP1,DP2,DP3,DP4,DP5,D42 and G12.

Not included are awards made under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and, beginning with fiscal year 2009, awards made under reimbursable agreements, appropriations to NIH for Superfund-related activities, gift funds, and Breast Cancer Research Stamp funds.
