Geographic Information Systems Special Interest Group (GISSIG)

The GIS Special Interest Group (GISSIG) at the National Cancer Institute was established in 1999. At first restricted to NCI staff, membership has expanded to include staff in other NIH institutes, NCI contractors, government GIS staff in the area, and professors at area universities active in GIS. The group meets at least 6 times per year, usually at the Surveillance Research Program offices in Rockville, MD, to discuss issues related to the collection, analysis, and dissemination of georeferenced cancer data. Seminar speakers are often invited from other agencies or local universities.

Washington, DC-area researchers interested in joining GISSIG should send an inquiry to the gis.cancer.gov web staff. New software tools and other newly-released GIS information from this group will be posted in the public section of the GIS.cancer.gov website. The benefit of GISSIG membership is notification of NCI GIS-related seminars in the Rockville, MD area.
