USCIS has established a toll-free military help line, 1-877-CIS-4MIL (1-877-247-4645), exclusively for members of the military and their families.

Services before you file

We provide a broad range of information through our website and by phone. You can check information, get assistance and get forms. You can also e-file certain applications. In addition to a wide variety of self-service information, you can call customer service at the above number for assistance.

You can also check to see our current processing time for an application before you file. Of course, a number of factors can affect our processing times, so they are subject to change.

Filing services

• You can e-file certain applications.
• Most others must be filed by mail.

Follow the instructions for the application you want to file.

• If you want to verify whether instructions have changed since you got your application forms, you can check our current form instructions.
• If the instructions say to file your application at one of our local offices, check the profile below to find your local office and find out whether you should file in person or must mail it to them.

Services after you file

You can check processing times for our applications and petitions based on where your case is being processed. For cases with a receipt number you can also monitor the actual case status, and can register to get automatic e-mail updates and/ or text message notifications as we process your case.

If you believe there is a problem with your case, if you move or need other service, we offer a variety of Case Services while a case is pending or after it is completed.

Office Locator

In addition to information and services through our website and by phone, we have several different kinds of offices that provide specialized services.

• Application Support Centers provide fingerprinting and related services
• Asylum Offices handle scheduled interviews for asylum-related issues only.
• Service Centers and our National Benefit Center receive and process a large variety of applications and petitions.
• Local Offices handle scheduled interviews on other applications. They also provide limited information and customer services that supplement those we provide through our website and by phone.
• Our National Records Center receives and processes FOIA requests and applications for genealogy information.
