Capacity Building to Address Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in Native Communities 

January 30, 2013 This webinar, jointly presented by SAMHSA's Native American Center for Excellence and SAMHSA's FASD Center for Excellence, focuses on the FASD Center's resources for Indian Country. It also highlights real-world case profiles that illustrate successful tribal efforts to prevent and/or address FASD. The discussion was facilitated by the Senior Native American Specialist for the FASD Center for Excellence and included the perspective of providers and the adoptive parent of a child with an FASD. The proceedings are available on NACE's web site.

CDC Vital Signs-Binge Drinking Among Women and Girls: A Serious, Under-Recognized Problem among Women and Girls 

January 8, 2013 The January edition of Vital Signs, the monthly newsletter of the CDC that focuses on a single, important public health topic, presents important new data on binge drinking among women and girls. The report, which is available as a web page and as a downloadable factsheet PDF icon, finds that binge drinking is a serious and under-recognized problem among women and high school girls.

According to new statistics, about 1 in 8 women aged 18 years and older and 1 in 5 high school girls binge drink; this level of drinking can lead to a variety of health problems, including pregnancies affected by fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).

Included in the January edition of Vital Signs are:

  • An infographic detailing the effects binge drinking can have on women and girls;
  • Statistics on which women and girls are most likely to binge drink
  • Practical strategies for combating binge drinking aimed at states, communities, health care professionals, women, and girls;
  • A detailed report on the morbidity and mortality associated with binge drinking among women and girls; and
  • Links to a variety of media on binge drinking among women and girls including a PSA and a short podcast.
