Dispute Systems Design

We develop customized dispute resolution mechanisms such as:

  • Structured Partnering: Structured Partnering is a process used to develop and sustain collaborations. It is especially relevant to scientific collaborations and is focused on developing agreements to anticipate problems, clarify expectations, establish open communication, and plan for conflict resolution. A sample partnering agreement is included in our section on tools for handling scientific conflicts.
  • Scientific Panels and Advisors: The Office of the Ombudsman works with several NIH scientists who serve as advisors in cases involving scientific disputes, authorship concerns, and other scientific matters. The ombudsman, in consultation with the parties, may be granted permission to seek confidential assistance from these advisors to assist in resolving science-related conflicts.
