Access and Use Standards and Vocabularies

caBIG® community-developed applications and infrastructure require consistent vocabularies and ontologies to support integration throughout the system. For additional information, you can visit the Vocabularies & Common Data Elements (VCDE) Workspace or the Vocabulary Knowledge Center.

What would you like to do?

Access all biomedical terminologies hosted by the NCI Enterprise Vocabulary Services (EVS) project

NCI Term Browser provides user-friendly access to all biomedical terminologies hosted by EVS including the NCI Metathesaurus (NCIm), which itself offers 76 terminologies cross-mapped to capture shared meanings. The NCI Term Browser replaces NCI BioPortal, which was retired in June 2010.

Access controlled terminologies supplied by the NCI Enterprise Vocabulary Services (EVS) Project

LexEVS is a collection of programmable interfaces that provide users with the ability to access controlled terminologies supplied by the NCI Enterprise Vocabulary Services (EVS) Project. The controlled terminologies hosted by the NCI EVS Project are published via the Open-Source LexEVS Terminology Server.

Collaboratively develop and maintain terminologies that support translational research

Biomedical Grid Terminology (BiomedGT)—a terminology developed collaboratively with help from domain experts in the community—builds on the strengths of the NCI Thesaurus, including concept orientation, description logic, and public accessibility. While the current version of BiomedGT has been seeded with NCI Thesaurus content, it is being restructured to facilitate federation and open content development.

Construct domain models and knowledge-based applications with ontologies

Protégé is a free, open-source platform that provides a suite of tools to construct domain models and knowledge-based applications with ontologies. At its core, Protégé implements a rich set of knowledge-modeling structures and actions that support the creation, visualization, and manipulation of ontologies in various representation formats. Protégé can be extended by way of a plug-in architecture and a Java-based Application Programming Interface (API) for building knowledge-based tools and applications.

Identify common data elements to support standards-based clinical data collection

CDE Browser enables clinical researchers to browse, search and export CDEs (Common Data Elements) from caDSR, the database that stores and manages CDEs. Once identified, you can use these CDEs as questions on a Case Report Form (CRF).

Create reusable electronic Case Report Forms (eCRFs) to support clinical research

Form Builder can create electronic Case Report Forms (eCRFs) using the Common Data Elements (CDEs) identified and selected by the CDE Browser. The Form Builder tool uses the stored metadata to provide default question text and value domain information automatically. CDEs can be grouped and saved as Modules that can be copied from one Form to another.
