Teaming Up to Fight Cancer

Dr. Carole Parent, Senior Investigator of CCR's Laboratory of Cellular and Molecular Biology discusses the 2010 signing of the Graduate Partnership Program in Cancer Technology. This agreement allows Dr. Parent and other NCI researchers to collaborate with University of Maryland students studying physics and math in hopes of encouraging groundbreaking cancer research. In the video, you will meet University of Maryland physics student Colin McCann, who is currently collaborating with Dr. Parent. Learn more about Dr. Parent's research. Read about the NCI/UMD collaboration in CCR Connections.

Using Vaccines to Tackle HIV

Dr. Genoveffa Franchini, Senior Investigator in the Vaccine Branch at the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Center for Cancer Research (CCR), discusses the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between NCI and the pharmaceutical company, Sanofi Pasteur. This CRADA allowed for the development of a vaccine approach that reduced the risk of HIV infection. The results were shown in one of the largest HIV intervention trials to date. Learn more about Dr. Franchini's research. Read the HIV vaccine story in CCR Connections.

Camera on Cancer Research: Unraveling the Molecular Mechanisms of Neuroblastoma

Dr. Carol Thiele, Head of the Cell and Molecular Biology Section in the Pediatric Oncology Branch, takes you into her lab where she researches the molecular mechanisms of neuroblastoma cells. Dr. Thiele studies whether these cells proliferate or differentiate in response to various compounds, a key factor for developing new therapeutic approaches to treat neuroblastoma. Watch and listen to Dr. Thiele's progress in discovering less toxic and more effective therapies for neuroblastoma patients. Learn more about Dr. Thiele's research.

Camera on Cancer Research: Using Mice Models to Fight Thyroid Cancer

Dr. Sheue-yann Cheng, Head of the Gene Regulation Section in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, takes you into her lab where she researches the biology and molecular actions of thyroid hormone receptors in health and disease. Dr. Cheng uses mouse models to study resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH), a key step in cancer development. Watch and listen to Dr. Cheng's passion for uncovering possible molecular targets for the treatment of thyroid cancer. Learn more about Dr. Cheng's research.

photo of Dr. Natasha Caplen

Camera on Cancer Research: Using Genetics to Help fight Cancer

Dr. Natasha Caplen, Head of the Gene Silencing Section in CCR's Genetic Branch, walks you through her lab and explains how she uses a gene silencing mechanism called RNA interference (RNAi) to selectively switch off one gene at a time. This technology allows her to discover a gene's function. Caplen uses this information to find new cancer treatment targets and possible agents that can block these targets. Learn more about Dr. Caplen's research.

Camera on Cancer Research: Eradicating Multiple Myeloma

Dr. Ola Landgren, Head of the Multiple Myeloma Section in CCR's Medical Oncology Branch, takes you into his lab and clinic where he is studying two pre-myeloma conditions, patients with abnormal M-protein levels in their blood, and patients with smoldering multiple myeloma, a precursor disease that often transforms into multiple myeloma. He will show you how his natural history study of pre-myeloma patients will try to find treatments that can intervene earlier and keep the myeloma from progressing to a life-threatening disease. Learn more about Dr. Landgren's research. Read more about Dr. Landgren's clinical trials.
