Pharmacy Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the copay for pharmacy benefits?
  • How do I get my refills?
    • Using a touch-tone phone to call our automated refill request system, Dial-A-Refill.
    • Completing a mailing the refill request slip that comes with each prescription.
    • Leaving the refill slip in the pharmacy drop box the next time you come to the medical center.
    • Refills should be requested at least 3 weeks before running out of medicine.  This will allow ample time for processing and delivery.
    • The Robley Rex VA DOES NOT refill medications at the pharmacy window.
  • How do I get my medications?
    • NEW prescriptions are normally mailed to you.  However, if the prescription is needed right away, it can be picked up at the VA Pharmacy or can be mailed to your home.  Prescriptions that are mailed come from a centralized pharmacy affiliated with the Robley Rex VAMC located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  Prescriptions that are mailed usually arrive within 14 days.
  • What if there are no refills remaining?
    • If you do not have any refills remaining and need to continue the medication, contact your provider as early as possible for a new prescription.
  • What is a formulary?
    • The formulary is a comprehensive list of medications approved by a group of physicians and pharmacists.  Formularies promote rational, clinically appropriate, safe and cost effective drug therapy.  Like all health-care systems, the VA will pay for medications that are on the formulary.  This list is carefully developed to include a full-range of medications necessary to treat medical conditions.  If your current medication is not on the formulary, a medically equivalent alternative will be prescribed for you.
  • Can I get medications not on the formulary?
    • It is rare, but under certain conditions, you may be prescribed a drug that does not appear on the formulary.  Your VA provider will need to request this non-formulary medication by completing a special request form.  This form is then reviewed to ensure that the non-formulary drug requested is being used appropriately and for an FDA approved use.  This process may take a few days.
  • Can I get prescriptions from my private physician filled at a VA Pharmacy?
    • No.  In order to receive your medication from the VA, a VA healthcare provider needs to see you and prescribe your medication.  VA healthcare providers will work closely with your private physician to provide you with continuity of care.  It is important to supply your VA provider with your medical records from your private physician.
  • Who can write my prescriptions?
    • The VA pharmacy is allowed to ONLY honor prescriptions written by a VA provider.  The VA cannot fill prescriptions that are written by private physicians.
  • Will the VA pay for a prescription at a non-VA pharmacy?
    • No.  The VA is not responsible for payment of outside physicians' fees or medications.  You or your private insurance company is responsible for these costs.
