Dr. Gea-Banacloche received his medical education at the Universidad Autónoma Medical School in Madrid, Spain. After completing his Internal Medicine training in Madrid and working in the Department of Internal Medicine of the University Hospital Clinica Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, Spain, he moved to the NIH where he obtained Allergy and Immunology and Infectious Diseases training under Dr. H. Clifford Lane of the Laboratory of Immunoregulation of NIAID (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases). His research during this time involved immune reconstitution in HIV disease and antiviral-specific T-cell responses. In 2000 he joined the Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch of NCI as Infectious Diseases consultant. Since then, he has focused on clinical infectious diseases in immunocompromised patients. Most recently he has collaborated in developing the Sepsis Survival Campaign Guidelines (2004). Since early 2005, he is the Chief of the NIH Infectious Disease Consultation Service, a joint collaboration between NCI and the Laboratory of Clinical Infectious Diseases of NIAID.
