Treasury Savings Options Go All-Electronic

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has made the move to all-electronic Treasury securities. While paper savings bonds are no longer sold at financial institutions, digital savings bonds can still be bought and cashed online at the Treasury Department's secure, web-based system—TreasuryDirect.

Your constituents may have questions about buying digital savings bonds or other Treasury securities. You'll find a number of helpful resources at the bottom of this page to help you respond to constituent inquiries.

Benefits of Digital Savings Bonds

Ending the sale of paper savings bonds will save taxpayers $120 million over the next five years. There are additional benefits to digital Treasury securities which you can share with your constituents. For example, digital savings bonds are:

  • Affordable. Treasury securities don't require a lot of money to start saving—you can buy a savings bond for just $25.
  • Safe. Treasury securities are trusted savings options that protect the original principal.
  • Convenient. You can buy Treasury securities online, 24/7 through TreasuryDirect. No more waiting in line or worrying about misplacing paper bonds.
