SBIR & STTR Programs Highlighted in NCI FY2013 Plan and Budget Proposal

Each year, the NCI prepares a budget proposal for the President and Congress, including descriptions of NCI-supported scientific advancements and how the nation is working together to control cancer and its effects. The FY2013 plan includes information about the NCI SBIR Development Center's efforts to strengthen the role of small businesses in fostering R&D and to facilitate the commercialization of cancer technologies. Acknowledging NCI Funding in News Stories

NIH requires grantees to acknowledge federal funding in stories released for public dissemination, including news releases, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations. We are asking all awardees to begin mentioning their NIH grant or contract number specifically in all external communications of this nature. This will help us associate news stories with awards in the NIH RePORT database and tell the story of your research better. Click here for additional information.

$10M in SBIR Phase IIB Bridge Award FY2013 Funding Available

NCI has announced $10M in funding for up to ten awards in FY2013 for small businesses that seek bridge funding to support the next stage of development for promising NIH-funded SBIR Phase II projects in the areas of cancer therapeutics, imaging technologies, interventional devices, or diagnostics and prognostics. The NCI created the Bridge Award to help small businesses obtain necessary funding to accelerate promising cancer technologies toward commercialization and ultimately improve cancer prevention, detection, and treatment for patients.

NIH Announces Niche Assessment Program for SBIR & STTR Phase I Awardees

NIH is pleased to announce the launch of the 9th Niche Assessment Program for NIH SBIR & STTR Phase I awardees. The NIH Niche Assessment Program is a nationwide program funded by NIH to help jump-start the commercialization efforts of SBIR & STTR Phase I awardees. Applications are accepted on a "first-come, first-served" basis until all 125 slots are filled. Please click here for more information about the program and how to apply.

NCI Clinical Assay Development Program (CADP)

The NCI Clinical Assay Development Program (CADP) is requesting project applications from investigators seeking clinical assay validation resources that are designed to assist with the development of assays that may predict therapy response or prognostic behavior of a diagnosed cancer, primarily for use in clinical trials. Approved projects for the NCI CADP will be provided access to the Institute's assay development and validation resources, including project management support. Please note that this call for applications is not a solicitation for biomarker discovery and is not a grants program.

SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Updates

The SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act of 2011 introduced several key changes to the SBIR & STTR Programs relating to expanded eligibility, increased set-aside funding, and enhancements to the awarding process. Some of the biggest changes include expanding eligibility to small businesses that are majority-owned by multiple venture capital operating companies, hedge funds, or private equity firms; making STTR Phase I awardees eligible to apply for an SBIR Phase II award and vice versa; and imposing stricter caps on award budgets. For ongoing updates on the NIH implementation plan and the changes resulting from the SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act of 2011, please continue to check the new NIH website. Central Contractor Registry (CCR) Transitioned to New System for Award Management (SAM)

At the end of July 2012, CCR services moved to a new system called SAM. New applicants can register with SAM at http://www.sam.gov/. If you were already registered with CCR and your record was scheduled to expire between July 16, 2012 and October 15, 2012, CCR/SAM is extending your expiration date by 90 days, and there is no need for further action at this time. You will receive an e-mail notification from CCR when your expiration date is extended, and will then receive standard e-mail reminders to update your record based on this new expiration date. Those future e-mail notifications will come from SAM. Applicants are encouraged to verify their SAM status and renew registration if needed. You can check your SAM status at SAM.gov. Innovative Partnerships for Commercializing Health Information Technology

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) recently announced a new Program Announcement, aimed at accelerating the development and commercialization of consumer health information technology products that translate the behavioral and communication science evidence base for the prevention and control of cancer and other chronic diseases. The NCI and the National Library of Medicine (a co-funding partner) are interested in supporting the development and dissemination of evidence-based health information technology (health IT) products that have the potential to prevent or reduce the risk of cancer, facilitate patient-provider communication and/or improve disease outcomes in consumer and clinical settings. NCI Recovery Act Funds Help Small Businesses Develop Innovative Cancer Technologies

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites you to learn more about the important research and services that are being funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. NCI's Recovery Act website recently added highlights about the NCI's Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer (SBIR & STTR) Programs, which play an important role in closing the funding gap that often hinders the commercialization of small businesses' innovative cancer technologies and therapies.
