The portrait of Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ben Gilman shows the Chairman before a window, with the Capitol in the background. The angle of the building makes it clear to those who know the layout of the House’s campus that the Chairman is in the Rayburn House Office Building, just southwest of the Capitol. The Foreign Affairs Committee hearing room and Gilman’s office were both located in the Rayburn Building. Beyond locating him geographically, the presence of the Capitol in this and other House Collection portraits pinpoints the sitter’s status as a Member of Congress.
