Continuing Education and Training Opportunities

  • AMIA 10x10 Courses - (American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA))  - Training program conducted across the United States by AMIA in collaboration with key academic partners in the biomedical and health informatics education community. The content covers areas such as electronic and personal health records, health information exchange, standards and terminology, and health care quality and error prevention.
  • APHA Continuing Professional Education - (American Public Health Association (APHA))  - The mission of APHA Learning and Professional Development Programs Unit is to promote professional development, and strengthen public health practice within the core guidelines of the public health essential services.
  • Asksphere - (Health Resources and Services Administration) - a clearinghouse of public health "learning objects" that can be used by those developing training. Developed by the Southeast Public Health Training Center.
  • California Distance Learning Health Network - (California Distance Learning Health Network)  - CDLHN promotes and provides access to continuing educational opportunities for healthcare workers at a time and a location convenient to where they live and work.
  • CDC Learning Connection - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Learning products and resources from across the public health community to help improve public health knowledge and skills.
  • CMED Public Health Grand Rounds - (Department of Community Medicine (CMED), West Virginia University School of Medicine)  - This program offers free preferred continuing education credits for physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, public health practitioners, as well as CHES credits.
  • Continuing Education Program on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Risk Reduction - (Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health & Human Development, NIH (NICHD))  - Free program that provides nurses with the most current and accurate information to communicate risk factors and answer parents' questions about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Nurses who successfully complete the course will earn 1.1 contact hours of continuing education credit.
  • Culture & Health Literacy Online Training - (Midwest Center for Life-Long Learning in Public Health)  - This online training discusses how inequalities in health information contribute to unequal treatment and health outcomes for some populations (health disparities) and what communities can do to close the gap and improve health literacy.
  • Distance Learning Programs Available at Accredited Schools of Public Health - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - Provides easy access to information on certificate and graduate programs offered via a distance. The web page features a search engine designed to help potential students identify distance-based opportunities; a resource page with links to locate other training resources offered via distance learning modalities, or to learn more about the distance learning field; and current links directly to each school of public health through a unified site.
  • Effective Communication Tools for Healthcare Professionals - (Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA))  - Online interactive training course that aims to raise the quality of provider-patient interactions by teaching providers and their staff how to gauge and respond to their patients' health literacy, cultural background, and language skills.
  • Epidemiologic Case Studies - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Interactive case study exercises developed to teach epidemiologic principles and practices. They are based on real-life outbreaks and public health problems and were developed in collaboration with the original investigators and experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Finding and Using Health Statistics: A Self-Study Course - (National Library of Medicine, National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology)  - This online course describes the range of available health statistics and presents strategies to successfully find health statistics.
  • Health Indicators: a 4-Part Webinar Series - (National Library of Medicine, National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology)  - Recorded webinar series that provides an overview of health indicators, an in-depth review of a county-level indicator project, practical approaches in using health indicator data to engage with communities, and an exploration of several important new indicator efforts.
  • Health Literacy for Public Health Professionals - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Free web-based course to educate public health professionals on the importance of health literacy and their role in providing health information and services and promoting public health literacy.

  • KaiserEDU.org - (Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF))  - Designed to provide students, faculty and others interested in learning about health policy easy access to the latest data, research, analysis, and developments in health policy.
  • MI-INFO Online Tutorials - (University of Michigan School of Public Health)  - MI-INFO (Michigan Informatics) is a series of online tutorials on health information and computer skills designed to support academic public health informatics programs and public health outreach training initiatives. The nine tutorials are competency-based and feature learning objectives, key concepts, exercises, and case studies. The tutorials will enable public health audiences to better access, evaluate, manage, and apply information needed to respond to public health issues and problems.
  • Minnesota Emergency Readiness Education and Training (MERET) - (University of Minnesota)  - Continuing education to educate and train Minnesota's health care workers in emergency preparedness. Online MERET modules are designed to prepare the health care workforce to function during public health emergencies or bioterrorism events by providing competency based awareness-level online training for hospitals, clinics, long-term care, public health agencies and other community emergency responders, including volunteers.
  • National Center for Disaster Medicine and Public Health - (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences)  - The Center serves the U.S. Government as an academic home for the development and dissemination of core skills, knowledge and abilities, and for research on education and training strategies in the fields of disaster medicine and public health.
  • NCHEC Continuing Education Credit Activities - (National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC))  - List of upcoming events and self studies that provide continuing education credit hours (CECH) for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES) and Master Certified Health Education Specialists (MCHES).

  • Pennsylvania Public Health Training Center (PAPHTC) - (University of Pittsburgh, Graduate School of Public Health)  - The goal of PAPHTC is to enhance the ability of public health agencies to provide training programs that focus on a continuous quality improvement model. This site provides access to webcasts, online courses, and public health training resources.
  • Practicing Cross Cultural Communication - (New York New Jersey Public Health Training Center (NYNJ-PHTC))  - The first of three interactive modules in which you can hone your cross-cultural communication skills, in the context of a hepatitis A outbreak in a Mexican-American community. Experience a practical application of the ten effective strategies for cross-cultural communication. You must register to select a username and password. The online course is free.
  • Prevention Research Centers (PRC) Training - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Web-based catalog of training programs for public health practitioners, public health advocates, community health workers, teachers, and students. The training covers a wide range of topics within the vast and changing field of public health.
  • Public Health Informatics Program - (University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) School of Public Health)  - The UIC Public Health Informatics (PHI) programs are designed to develop experts in the systematic application of information technology to public health practice, research and learning. UIC offers fully online learning opportunities to earn a certificate in public health informatics.
  • Public Health Information and Data Tutorial - (National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM))  - Provides online instruction for members of the public health workforce on issues related to information access and management. Four modules cover staying informed about news in public health, health education resources, public health statistics and data sets, and supporting decisions with the best evidence.
  • Public Health Law Program Training and Educational Resources - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The Public Health Law Program (PHLP) develops and shares a growing portfolio of courses and other learning materials in applied public health law.   • Rapid Response Training: The Role of Public Health in a Multi-Agency Response to Avian Influenza - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE))  - Course materials presented at regional trainings provide a standardized curriculum to state and local public health responders about how to identify and control human infections and illness associated with avian influenza A (H5N1).   • Six Weeks to Genomic Awareness - (Michigan Public Health Training Center)  - An online series of presentations designed to provide public health professionals a foundation for understanding how genomics advances are relevant to public health.
  • SOPHE Self Study - (Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE))  - Self-study opportunities to provide health education specialists with continuing education contact hours.   • APHL Fellowships - (Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) U.S.)  - Fellowship and traineeship programs that prepare students for careers in public health laboratories and support specialized training for practicing scientists.
  • Applied Public Health Informatics Fellowship - (Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Safe States Alliance)  - The goal of the Fellowship is to provide a high quality training experience and to secure long-term career placement for Fellows at the state or local level.
  • ASPH/CDC Allan Rosenfield Global Health Fellowship Program - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Provides international training opportunities for recent graduates of ASPH member accredited schools of public health (MPH and Doctoral level).
  • CDC Public Health Associate Program (PHAP) - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Competitive, two-year, paid fellowship within the CDC. Public Health Associates are assigned to state, tribal, local and territorial public health agencies.
  • CDC Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Two-year applied, competency-based training program for professionals with education and experience in information and computer science and technology and public health or health care.
  • CDC-Hubert Global Health Fellowship - (CDC Foundation)  - This fellowship provides third and fourth year medical and veterinary students with valuable public health experience in an international setting. The main focus of the fellowship is a 6 to 12 week field assignment. Fellows are mentored by experienced CDC staff and learn through hands-on experience while working on a public health project in a developing country. The CDC-Hubert Global Health Fellowship is endowed by the O.C. Hubert Charitable Trust.
  • Commonwealth Fund Fellowships - (Commonwealth Fund)  - Commonwealth Fund fellowship programs are designed to give promising young researchers the opportunity for in-depth study of various health care policy topics, working with investigators, policy analysts, government officials, and others in a number of U.S. and international settings.
  • Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Post-graduate training program of service and on-the-job learning for health professionals interested in the practice of applied epidemiology.
  • FCD Young Scholars Program - (Foundation for Child Development (FCD))  - The FCD Young Scholars Program aims to stimulate basic and policy-relevant research focused on the early education, health, and well-being of immigrant children from birth to age ten, particularly those who are living in low-income families. Eligible researchers will have earned their doctoral degrees within the last 15 years, and be full-time, faculty members of a college or university in the United States.
  • FDA Commissioner's Fellowship Program - (Food and Drug Administration (FDA) U.S.)  - Two-year fellowship program that provides an opportunity for health professionals and scientists to receive training and experience at the FDA.
  • FDA Tobacco Regulatory Science Fellowship - (Food and Drug Administration (FDA) U.S., Institute of Medicine (IOM))  - A new regulatory science fellowship program designed for mid-career professionals to gain experience and expertise to further define and develop the field of regulatory science as it relates to the regulation of tobacco products and FDA's new authorities under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act. Deadline to submit all application materials is June 18, 2012.
  • Fulbright-Fogarty Awards in Public Health - (Institute of International Education)  - The Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship promotes the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings. The application deadline is October 17, 2012.
  • Funding and Fellowships Sponsored by ASTMH - (American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH))  - Research awards and fellowships to promote world health by the prevention and control of tropical diseases.
  • Global Health Fellows Program - (Harvard School of Public Health, Public Health Institute, Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, United States Agency for International Development (USAID))  - The goal of the Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP) is to improve the effectiveness of USAID Population, Health and Nutrition programs by developing and increasing capacity of health professionals in Washington, DC and overseas. The program offers internship and fellowship opportunities that provide field experience, mentoring and career development in international public health to underrepresented communities.
  • Health Communications Internship Program - (National Cancer Institute, NIH (NCI))  - The internship program gives highly qualified graduate students and recent graduate degree recipients the opportunity to participate in vital health and science communications projects in one of the many offices that make up the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
  • Health Policy Fellowship - (AcademyHealth, National Center for Health Statistics, CDC (NCHS))  - The aim of the fellowship is to foster collaboration between NCHS staff and visiting scholars on a wide range of topics of mutual concern. The fellowship allows visiting scholars to conduct new and innovative analyses and participate in developmental and health policy activities related to the design and content of future NCHS surveys.
  • HRSA Public Health Internship Program - (Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA))  - Unfunded practicum experience for graduate and undergraduate students in good standing at schools of public health and public health programs in the United States. Public Health Interns complete a one semester rotation within one of HRSA's Bureaus or Offices.
  • MacNeal Scholarship, NALBOH - (National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH))  - A special opportunity for students seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree in the fields of public health, environmental health, health education, or clinical services. This scholarship program is designed to assist students participating in NALBOH's Annual Conference and give the opportunity to learn more about public health governance.
  • Medical Informatics Training - (Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, NLM)  - The Lister Hill Center provides training opportunities for individuals at various stages in their careers. Fellowship programs may be as short as eight weeks or as long as one year, with possible renewal for a second year.
  • MySPH Opportunity Manager - (Arnold School Office of Public Health Practice, University of South Carolina)  - Opportunities for graduate assistantships, internships, and fellowships.
  • ORISE Research Participation Programs at the CDC - (Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE))  - The ORISE Research Participation Programs at the CDC are designed to provide a flow of qualified researchers (postgraduates, students, and faculty) to participate in current research and development activities related to CDC's critical missions.
  • Overseas Fellowships in Global Health and Clinical Research (Fogarty Fellowship) Apply by November 19, 2010 - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), Fogarty International Center, NIH (FIC))  - ASPH is pleased to partner with the NIH's Fogarty International Center (FIC), and the FIC Research Scholars-Fellows (FICRS-F) Support Center at the Vanderbilt University Institute for Global Health (VIGH) to announce a one-year clinical research training experience for graduate-level U.S. students in the health professions. This is an opportunity for highly motivated individuals to experience mentored research training at top-ranked NIH-funded research centers in developing countries.
  • Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship: Developing Public Health Leaders - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The CDC Preventive Medicine Residency (PMR) is a 12-month program meeting the Practicum Year training requirements for certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine. The PMR is designed to prepare physicians for future leadership roles in public health at federal, state, and local levels.
  • Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) is a 2-year applied fellowship for professionals with a master's or higher degree. Professionals are trained to apply information science and technology to the practice of public health.
  • Public Health Prevention Service Fellowship - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The Public Health Prevention Service (PHPS) is a 3-year training and service fellowship for master's level public health professionals. The fellowship focuses on public health program management and provides experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation through specialized hands-on training and mentorship at CDC, and in state and local health agencies.
