Training Package Structure
The training package consists of the following six (6) modules:

  • Module 1: Understanding the Multiple Needs of Families Involved with the Child Welfare System
  • Module 2: Understanding Substance Use Disorders, Treatment, and Recovery
  • Module 3: Understanding Mental Disorders, Treatment and Recovery
  • Module 4: Engagement and Intervention with Parents Affected by Substance Use Disorders, Mental Disorders and Co-Occurring Disorders
  • Module 5: Developing a Comprehensive Response for Families Affected by Substance Use Disorders, Mental Disorders and Co-Occurring Disorders
  • Module 6: Understanding the Needs of Children of Parents with Substance Use or Mental Disorders

Helping Child Welfare Workers Support Families with Substance Use, Mental, and Co-Occurring Disorders


Overview

Helping Child Welfare Workers Support Families with Substance Use, Mental, and Co-Occurring Disorders Training Package was developed to educate child welfare professionals about substance abuse and mental health disorders among families involved in the child welfare system. It is intended to provide learning opportunities and baseline knowledge on substance abuse and mental health problems and interventions; motivate and facilitate cross-systems work; and incorporate cultural awareness and facilitate cultural competency in child welfare practice.

The training package consists of 6 modules, approximately 2-3 hours each, which can be delivered over a series of weeks or through a 1-2 day training program. Each module contains a range of training materials that were developed to be adapted to meet the needs of child welfare trainers for in-person workshops and/or training sessions.

Methods: PowerPoint presentations (or overhead/transparencies); large group and small group discussions.

Training Aids: Projector and computer, disk with PowerPoint file (or overhead and transparencies); flip chart with markers; participant notebook.

Time: Between 2 hours, 45 minutes to 3 hours per module.

There is no cost to access any of the materials contained in each module. Modules can be downloaded individually or as the entire training package.

Intended Audience

This training is for use with pre-service or in-service child welfare workers, with a focus on basic information. However, this training is not designed for advanced practitioners.

Trainer Qualifications

Trainers should be knowledgeable about substance abuse, mental health and child welfare systems. If the trainer does not have specific knowledge in substance abuse or mental health, then he/she is encouraged to reach out to the substance abuse or mental health agencies in the area for support.
