Program Development

The principal implication for fathering programs is that these programs should involve a wide range of interventions, reflecting the multiple domains of responsible fathering, the varied residential and marital circumstances of fathers, and the array of personal, relational, and ecological factors that influence men as fathers.

Responsible Fathering:  An Overview and Conceptual Framework

The principal implication for fathering programs is that these programs should involve a wide range of interventions, reflecting the multiple domains of responsible fathering, the varied residential and marital circumstances of fathers, and the array of personal, relational, and ecological factors that influence men as fathers. The report is by William J. Doherty, Edward F. Kouneski, and Martha Farrell Erickson of the University of Minnesota, September, 1996.

Responsible Fatherhood Management Information System

HHS has developed a tool to help fatherhood programs manage and assess their programs. The Responsible Fatherhood Management Information System (RFMIS) will help programs maintain information on the services needed and delivered to fathers in their programs. The system allows programs to track the progress of individual fathers and to aggregate data on program participants for reporting purposes. The RFMIS is available for use as a paper and pencil tracking system or as an electronic database that can be downloaded into any computer system that uses Microsoft Access (versions '97 through current). A supplementary data tool for tracking client outcomes will be available later. The RFMIS has been used by 15 HHS fatherhood project sites and in eight fatherhood projects funded by the Sisters of Charity Foundation of South Carolina.

Regional Activities

Regions, States, and fath-based and community organizations continue to develop and implement new activities that support fatherhood and promote marriage.  The Around the Regions page of the HHS' Fatherhood website has been revised and updated to reflect 2005/2006 fatherhood support activities that have been funded by the federal Department of Health and Human Services and by state and local community efforts. Information is available by Region and State.

The Welfare Peer Technical Assistance Network

The Welfare Peer Technical Assistance Network provides peer-to-peer technical assistance to public agencies and private organizations operating the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program. Technical assistance is provided through a variety of mechanisms: peer-to-peer site visits, workshops, moderated teleconferences and interactive Q&A sessions. The Web site also highlights policy relevant research, innovative programs, related links and upcoming events. The objective of the Peer TA Network is to facilitate the sharing of information between and among states and to establish linkages between organizations serving the needs of welfare recipients.

Domestic Violence Resources

Violence and abuse affect all kinds of people every day. It doesn't matter what race or culture you come from, how much money you have, or if you have a disability. It is most common among women between ages 15 and 54, but it can happen at any age. Learn more about how to know the signs of violence and abuse. Learn how to stay safe. If you are being abused or have a loved one who is abused, or think there is abuse, get help as soon as you can. Remember abuse can be physical, mental, and emotional.
