The following fellowships have been offered in the past.  Check the Web sites for current information on eligibility criteria and application deadlines.

Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program

This program seeks dynamic, passionate individuals who are committed to addressing the critical health and aging policy issues that we face today. This program is designed to build a cadre of leaders whose contributions to policymaking will enhance the lives of older Americans for decades to come. With professional backgrounds across the spectrum of disciplines and career pathways in geriatrics, gerontology and aging services and armed with the Program's extensive training and direct experiences in U.S. health policymaking, Health and Aging Policy Fellows go on to play key roles in the design and implementation of healthcare policy. We invite you to explore the possibility of joining this cadre of leaders in the field.  

Genetics and Public Policy Fellowship

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) and the American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) are now accepting applications for the 2013 Genetics and Public Policy Fellowship. The fellowship is designed as a bridge for genetics professionals wishing to transition to a policy career. This unique fellowship provides three separate types of policy experience: within NHGRI's policy branch; on Capitol Hill serving elected officials in the Legislative Branch; and at ASHG in the non-profit science advocacy sector.  

Howard Hughes Medical Research Fellows Program partnership with KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH) are pleased to announce a partnership to fund medical students for a year of basic research through HHMI's Medical Research Fellows Program. The new partnership presents a unique opportunity for students to conduct research in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV at K-RITH, a new cutting-edge research institute in Durban, South Africa.

The year-long fellowships will begin in the summer of 2013 and are open to students currently enrolled in US medical schools. Students should have previous research experience and a strong interest in infectious disease. MD/PhD students are not eligible to apply. NOTE: the application deadline for the 2013-2014 academic year is January 11, 2013.

The HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program enables medical students at schools located in the U.S. to spend a year conducting basic, translational, or applied biomedical research. HHMI and its partner organizations will award up to 77 fellowships for 2013-2014. Fellows will receive a stipend of $29,000, and allowances totaling an additional $11,000.

James Smithson Fellowship Program

The James Smithson Fellowship Program is open to post-doctoral students in the fields of science, the humanities and the arts. Fellows will work in one of the subject areas defined by the Smithsonian strategic plan¹s four grand challenges: Understanding the American Experience, Valuing World Cultures, Understanding and Sustaining a Biodiverse Planet, and Unlocking the Mysteries of the Universe. Specific fellowships will be tailored to each individual¹s interests, field and talents. Policy-focused activities will take them beyond their scholarly research to work with other federal, national and international agencies and organizations.

Supreme Court Fellows Program
These fellowships are open to individuals with a post-graduate degree, at least two years of professional experiences, and multidisciplinary training and experience, including familiarity with the judicial process.

Yerby Postdoctoral Fellowships Program 
The Harvard School of Public Health Yerby Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is designed to increase diversity among individuals who wish to pursue academic careers in public health.  Working closely with accomplished faculty mentors, Yerby fellows gain experience and skills in areas critical to success in an academic environment, with an emphasis on research, publication, and grant writing.  

Applicants should be members of a minority group that is underrepresented in academic public health; individuals from other backgrounds that would contribute to academic diversity, including those from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds, will also be considered.  Candidates must have received (or be about to receive) a doctoral degree in a relevant field.

FDA Tobacco Regulatory Science Fellowship

This new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) fellowship program at the Center of Tobacco Products (CTP) is an excellent opportunity for mid-career professionals to gain experience and expertise to further define and develop the field of regulatory science as it relates to the regulation of tobacco product manufacturing, distribution, and marketing. Fellows will actively participate in the development of science-based public health strategies and policies related to tobacco product use, which is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. They will have the opportunity to serve as the lead for defined projects, meet with policy leaders, and develop new competencies, including new knowledge, skills, and experiences.

FDA Commissioner's Fellowship Program

This two-year program in regulatory science combines coursework and research.  Fellows train at the FDA White Oak campus in Silver Spring.

Avalere FDA Policy Fellowship Program

Avalere's FDA Policy Fellowship Program targets PhD and MD degreed professionals who have strong backgrounds in science and technology and are looking to transition their scientific background into the science/health policy environment.

AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellows Program

The program seeks to increase communication skills in student scientists as they not only become more adept at describing scientific concepts to the journalism community, but also better equipped to engage the public about the impact of their work. The fellowship places 10 to 15 senior undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate science and engineering students at media sites nationwide to work as summer science reporters for 10 weeks. Past sites have included the Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and NPR. An eligible applicant's field of study must be in the natural, physical, health, engineering, computer, or social sciences, or mathematics. 

Society for Research in Child Development Policy fellowships 
The society offers two types of fellowships: Congressional and Executive Branch.  Fellows are members of the AAAS Science and Technology Fellowship Program.  Individuals who are members of SRCD and US citizens are eligible to apply. 

American Veterinary Medical Association Congressional Fellowships

Fellows are members of the AAAS Science and Technology Fellowship Program (see below)

Population Association of America Policy Fellowship

The fellow will be a member of the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship Program (see below).  The application deadline for the 2013 program is December 15, 2012.

NSF Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability (SEES) Fellows

Support for three years to conduct research, establish partnerships, and advance your professional development.  Research should be in the broadly defined area of sustanabilty sciences, beyond the applicant's current area of core expertise.  Projects should contribute to building a sustainable world in which human needs are met equitably without harm to the environment, and without sacrificing the ability of future generations to meet their needs. 

American Institute of Physics State Department Science Fellowships 
Most of the foreign policy issues faced by the U.S. Department of State have a scientific or technical component.  Contribute by spending a year in the Department.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a PhD in physics or a closely related field, and be members of one of AIP's ten member societies. 

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellowships
AAAS Fellowships provide scientists at all career levels the opportunity to spend a year in Washington, DC, working in Congress or an agency of the Executive Branch.  View a list of AAAS Fellows placed at the NIH since the inception of the program in 2001.  Watch a video celebrating the 40th anniversary of the program.

California Science and Technology Policy Fellowships

This program, which is modeled on the AAAS program above, places fellows in the California state legislature for one-year appointments. The citizenship requirements are less stringent than the AAAS requirements. 

National Academies of Science Christine Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Graduate Fellowship Program

This 12-week program is designed to engage participants in the analytical process that informs the creation of national policy-making with a science/technology element. Graduate and professional students and postdocs are eligible to apply.  There are multiple sessions a year.

USAID Global Health Fellows

Paid summer internships in the Washington, D.C. offices of the U.S. Agency for International Development

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Transition from the Laboratory to the Classroom Project

This program aims to identify postdoctoral fellows who have decided to leave the laboratory and wish to become certified secondary school science and mathematics teachers. It combines coursework in education at the University of Maryland College Park with classroom experience in Montgomery County.
