The NCIS Northeast Field Office (NEFO) is one of 42 naval and DOD commands located aboard Naval Station Newport, RI. Newport is the Navy's premier site for training officers, officer candidates, senior enlisted personnel and midshipman candidates, as well as conducting advanced undersea warfare and development systems. Several significant naval commands are located in Newport to include the Naval War College and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.
NEFO's area of responsibility includes the northeastern United States from Pennsylvania through Maine, as well as Bermuda and the Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.
As the northeastern United States encompasses a large defense industrial base that also includes university and Navy research centers, a major focus of NEFO is on economic crimes and research and technology protection. NEFO Special Agents also work general crimes cases, as well as computer investigations and operations, protective services operations, force protection operations, and counterintelligence and counterterrorism operations. NEFO has two Major Case Response Teams (MCRT), Fleet Operations Group (FOG) Detachments in New York/New Jersey and Newport/Boston, and a naval reserve unit that drills out of Newport and Groton, CT.
