Mission
The NCIS mission is to investigate and defeat criminal, terrorist, and foreign intelligence threats to the United States Navy and Marine Corps-ashore, afloat, and in cyberspace.

Southwest Field Office

Office History:
The Southwest Field Office (SWFO) executes the full spectrum of the NCIS mission.  Each day, SWFO personnel cover nearly the entire State of California and assignments within the country of Mexico while conducting investigations or operations in general crimes, procurement fraud, counterintelligence, and combating terrorism.

Territory Overview:
With over 111,000 active duty, reserve and civilian DoD employees and an additional 80,000 dependents, the workload within SWFO’s area of responsibility (AOR) never slows.    The AOR includes over 71 naval ships, 35 squadrons, 406 aircraft, 7 submarines and 9 military sealift vessels.  SWFO personnel work jointly with over 400 law enforcement agencies within the State of California to investigate murders, sexual assaults, and narcotic trafficking cases, and in recent years, have recovered over $16 million through procurement fraud investigations.  Personnel working counterintelligence matters are actively engaged in conducting sensitive national interest investigations and operations involving international players.  Similarly, combating terrorism personnel work closely with US partners to collaboratively identify and deter the ongoing threat to DON equities.

Home port to two aircraft carriers, SWFO personnel and ships supported the humanitarian mission surrounding the devastating tsunami in Japan.  As one of the few DoD agencies operating in Mexican ports, border and training areas, SWFO agents within the Combating Terrorism Mexico Referent Squad support U.S. Navy Third Fleet requirements. When working with Security Training Assistance and Assessment Team Pacific (STAATPAC), they provide seminars to Mexican law enforcement as well as collaborate on area threat assessments.  Their area expertise and the relationships they develop provide some of the only DoD reporting for area equities.
