Research Training

NIH research training and career development programs are designed to prepare both new and seasoned investigators for research careers. The programs ensure that diverse pools of highly trained scientists are available in sufficient numbers and with appropriate expertise to generate new discoveries, meet the needs of a rapidly moving scientific field, and bring science to bear on complex and evolving health care challenges. NIH offers a broad range of research training and career development opportunities for individuals at various career stages, from high school students to established scientists.


  • Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program
    National Cancer Institute (NCI)
    The NCI Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program provides postdoctoral training opportunities in cancer prevention and control. The purpose of the program is to train individuals from a multiplicity of health sciences disciplines in the field of cancer prevention and control.


  • Alcohol Prevention Science Research Training Program Exit Disclaimer
    National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA)
    This program is designed to enrich the capabilities of postdoctoral fellows who study alcohol abuse and related problems. This training program will provide fellows with insight and skills related to successful scientific careers.

    This one-year fellowship program provides an opportunity for medical students to learn about prevention research related to reducing exposure to environmental toxins.


  • Training in Environmental Health to Reduce Chronic Disease in Latin America
    National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
    Environmental exposures early in life contribute significantly to some of the most common chronic diseases such as asthma, obesity, and diabetes. Despite this, few health care providers are trained to study, diagnose, treat, and prevent disease of environmental origin. This program provides training in the identification, prevention, research, and treatment of pediatric environmental health for Latin American health care providers and scientists.
