  Field Definitions
Invention Disclosure Document Type

iEdison allows the electronic submission of the Invention Disclosure (the written description of the invention) any other documents associated with the patent report: a signed copy of the government confirmatory license, and the portion of the patent that include the government support clause. Any of these documents may be submitted through the iEdison interface as either a PDF or TIFF document type. Alternatively, the user may submit plain ASCII text by inserting it in the text box provided. Finally, the grantee or contractor may submit the required document in paper, either via fax or U.S. mail. The invention disclosure document type is used to indicate the type of document submitted.

Note: The grantee or contractor organization should be aware that only documents submitted as PDF, TIFF, or ASCII text will be able to be viewed through the iEdison user interface. Documents submitted in paper will be entered into the iEdison database by iEdison staff, but will not be available for viewing. Select the appropriate document type from the list.

PDF - Indicates a PDF version of the Invention Disclosure is provided.

Paper - Indicates a paper version of the Invention Disclosure was faxed or mailed.

TIFF - Indicates a TIFF version of the Invention Disclosure is provided.

Text - Indicates an ASCII Text version of the Invention Disclosure is provided. Text may be entered into the Invention Report text field provided.

Invention Report Number

The Invention Report number is automatically generated by the iEdison system for a new Invention Report when the data has been submitted, checked for errors, and verified. Once the Invention Report has been created, the Invention Report number cannot be modified by the organization. Reference should be made to the Invention Report number in all correspondence with the awarding agency.

Invention Docket Number

The Invention Docket Number field is provided for the convenience of iEdison users as a unique identifier to keep track of the associated Invention Report. Any combination of numbers and letters may be used to define the invention docket number. If a docket number is not provided, the iEdison system sets the value equal to the last six digits of the Invention Report number.

Invention Title

The invention title reflects the title of the invention as it appears in the employee's Invention Report.

Patent Docket Number

The Patent Docket Number field is provided for the convenience of iEdison users as a unique identifier to keep track of the associated patent report. Since multiple patents can evolve from a single invention, it is required that a unique patent docket number be provided to identify each patent.

Any combination of numbers and letters may be used to define the patent docket number. If a patent docket number is not provided, the iEdison system generates one automatically. The iEdison user may change this assigned number.

Grantee/Contractor Organization

The full name of the Grantee or Contractor Organization. When conducting a search, all or part of the organization name may be entered.

Supporting Agency

A Supporting Agency is any federal agency identified by the grantee or contractor organization as having contributed to either the conception or first actual reduction to practice of an invention.

Below is a list of designated supporting agencies represented in the iEdison system. Select the most appropriate acronym from the list.

AHRQ - Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
Army/MRMC - United States Army Medical Research and Material Command
Army/SMDC - United States Army Space & Missile Defense Command
Army/SSC - United States Army Soldier Systems Center
ATSDR - Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
CDC - Centers for Disease Control
DOE - Department of Energy
EPA - Environmental Protection Agency
FDA - Food and Drug Administration
IHS - Indian Health Service
Navy/ONR - United States Navy Office of Naval Research
NIH - National Institutes of Health
NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
NSF - National Science Foundation
USAF/AFOSR - United States Air Force/Air Force Office of Scientific Research
USAF/ESC - United States Air Force/Electronic Systems Center
USAID - United States Agency for International Development
USDA/ARS - United States Department of Agriculture/Agricultural Research Service
USDA/NIFA - National Institute of Food and Agriculture
USDA/FS - United States Department of Agriculture/Forest Service

Grant/Contract Number

For each agency contributing to the conception or first actual reduction to practice of the invention, the corresponding grant or contract number must be provided. The format of the number is unique to the associated agency. The iEdison system enforces the grant or contract number format for each participating iEdison agency.

Organization Code for Other Organizations to View Invention and Related Patents

Two grantee or contractor organizations often formally contribute to a specific subject invention. Accordingly, while one of the organizations takes the lead and bears the responsibility of reporting the invention, the second organization is provided the ability to view the Invention Report record.

To allow a second grantee or contractor organization to view the Invention Report, the lead organization must grant that permission by indicating the second organization's code in the field provided. The lead grantee or contractor organization should contact the secondary organization(s) to determine organization code(s).

The iEdison system allows up to three organizations to be granted view-only access.
