    Search Invention Reports


Note: The search fields on this page are all optional. Use any desired combination of the fields to perform the invention report search.

  1. Select Main Menu | Search/Modify Existing Invention Reports to access the Invention Report Search - Search For iEdison Invention Report page.
  2. Enter the desired search information, noting the following:
    • Your search will encompass all the invention reports from your organization and from other grantee or contractor organizations that have given your organization permission to view a particular invention report.
  3. Click Submit to enter the search and open the Invention Report Search - Results for Invention Report Search page.
  4. A list of matching invention reports is displayed. Note the following information about the invention report list:
    • Results are sorted alphabetically by invention title in ascending order. (Results can then be sorted by other data fields in ascending or descending order (e.g. by Title, Report Number, Docket Number, Primary Agency, Invention Status and Report Date)).
    • Depending on the Invention Status, different options will be available on the right hand side of the screen e.g.
      • Add Patent Report to associate a new patent report with the selected invention report. The Create New Patent Report - Patent Report Form page is displayed. See Add/Modify Patent Reports for more information regarding adding patent reports.
      • Modify Invention Report to view or make modifications to the selected invention report. The Modify Invention Report - Invention Report Form page is displayed. See Add/Modify Invention Reports for more information regarding modifying invention reports
      • Manage Utilization Reports to add/modify/view utilization reports for the selected invention report. The Manage Utilization Reports - Utilization Report Year page is displayed. See Add/Modify/View Utilization Reports for more information regarding adding/modifying/viewing utilization information.
      • View Messages to view notification messages associated with the selected invention report
  Field Definitions
Invention Report Number

The Invention Report number is automatically generated by the iEdison system for a new Invention Report after data has been submitted, checked for errors, and verified. The number is unique for each reported invention and cannot be duplicated or recycled. The Invention Report Number cannot be modified by the User.

Invention Docket Number

The invention docket number field is provided for the convenience of iEdison users. The field can be used for a unique identifier designated by the organization to help track a reported invention internally. Any combination of numbers and letters may be used for the invention docket number. If no invention docket number is provided, the iEdison system will use the last 6 digits of the Invention Report number, as the Invention Docket Number. The Invention Docket Number can be modified by the User.

Invention Title

The invention title reflects the title of the invention as it appears in the Employee's Invention Report or as the Investigator disclosed it to the organization.

Invention Keyword

The invention keyword field is optional. Invention keywords are optional. This field enables the grantee/contractor organization designate key terms to search and categorize Invention Reports.

The iEdison system allows up to 12 keywords (maximum 30 characters each) to be associated with each Invention Report.

Invention Report Date

The invention report date is the date that the invention was disclosed to the government. This date should not exceed 2 months from the date the institution learns of it pursuant to 37 CFR 401.14 (c)(1).

The format for this field is mm/dd/yyyy.

Inventor Name (First)
Inventor Name (Last)

The inventor fields reflect full name of each inventor associated with the invention. Any combination of upper- and lower-case letters may be used. The first- and last-name fields may be used to search for inventors associated with the Invention Report.

Grant/Contract Number

Provide all grant or contract numbers for each agency providing funding leading to the conception or first actual reduction to practice of the invention. The format of the grant or contract number is unique to each funding agency.

Please note entering of grant/contract numbers for non-iEdison-participating Agencies does not fulfill reporting obligations to those non-iEdison-participating Agencies.

Agency Designation

Each Invention Report in the iEdison system must include a primary agency. If the invention has been supported by additional federal agencies, the iEdison system allows this to also be reported.

Invention Status

The invention status reflects the current status of the title to rights to the Invention Report as of the current date. Select the most appropriate status.
