    Generate Third Party Assignment Request


  1. From the Welcome to iEdison page, select NIH to access the NIH Extramural Invention Topics page.
  2. Select NIH Procedures for Request for Approval of Third Party Assignment to access the Manage Third Party Assignment - Third Party Assignment Request page.
  3. Enter the third party assignment request information, noting the following:
    • Fields with an asterisk (*) are required.
  4. Click Submit.
  5. The Manage Third Party Assignment - Assignment Confirmation page is displayed with the information you entered filled in and an e-mail notification is submitted to the NIH.
  Field Definitions
Prefix
(e.g. Dr., Ms., Rev.)

The prefix to the name of the individual submitting the third-party assignment request.

First Name

The first name of the individual submitting the third-party assignment request.

Middle Name The middle name or initial of the individual submitting the third-party assignment request.
Last Name The last name of the individual submitting the third-party assignment request.
Suffix
(e.g. Jr., Nobel)
Any suffix to the name of the individual submitting the third-party assignment request.
E-mail Address

The e-mail address of the individual submitting the third-party assignment request. The format for this field is test@test.com.

Invention Report Number

The Invention Report number of the invention for which the assignment is requested. The Invention Report number can contain up to 18 characters. The first 7 characters, before the dash, may vary in length from 4, 5, 6, or 7 values. However, the second half (##-####) must contain values. The complete format for the field is: ##########-##-####.

Grantee/Contractor Organization

The full name of the Grantee or Contractor Organization that holds the rights to the invention for which the assignment is requested.

Grant/Contract Number

The grant or contract number of the primary agency supporting the invention for which the assignment is requested.

Invention Title

The title reflects the title of the invention for which the assignment is requested. The title must appear exactly as it appears in the Invention Report submitted to iEdison.

Invention Docket Number

The Invention Docket Number field is provided for the convenience of iEdison users as a unique identifier to help identify the invention for which the assignment is requested. The invention docket number may be any combination of numbers and letters. If an invention docket number is not provided, the iEdison system sets the value equal to the last six digits of the Invention Report number.

Description of the technology and explanation of why the assignment is necessary for commercialization of the technology

Provide a brief description of the technology encompassed in the invention for which the assignment is requested.

Explanation of why the technology cannot be commercialized through means other than assignment to a third party, such as through exclusive or co-exclusive licensing

Explain what steps have been taken to commercialize the invention for which the assignment is requested. Explain why efforts to commercialize have not met with success.

Description of entity to which contractor proposes assignment (i.e., non-profit, for-profit, etc.)

Briefly describe the type of organization to which the invention will be assigned. Include any information as to why this organization is well suited to pursue the commercialization in light of the earlier unsuccessful efforts.

How the public interest will be protected after assignment including, for example, 1) agreement by the assignee that it and its successors will be subject to the terms and provisions of 37 CFR 401 in commercializing the technology, 2) remedies for failure to comply with conditions placed on the assignment by the grantee for the public interest and 3) disposition of the technology in the event the assignee enters bankruptcy, dissolution, or is otherwise unable or unwilling to commercialize the technology

Given the objectives of the Bayh-Dole Act as they apply to the public interest, describe how that interest will be protected if the invention assignment is approved.
