NASS Changes Market Hogs and Pigs Weight Groups

Issued Dec. 10, 2009 by the Agricultural Statistics Board of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Statistics Service. For more information contact Nick Streff at (202) 720-3106

The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will change some market hog weight group categories used in its quarterly Hogs and Pigs report, beginning with the Dec. 30 report. The changes will align NASS data with international trade data and will allow a more uniform analysis of the North American hog inventory.

NASS will now report market hog weights in an “under 50 pounds” group and a “50-119 pounds” group instead of “under 60 pounds” and “60-119 pounds.” Other market weight groups will remain the same.

The Dec. 30 Hogs and Pigs report will include national- and state-level data for the new weight groups dating back to March 2008 in order to allow for historical analysis of the new weight groups.

The Hogs and Pigs report and all NASS reports are available online at www.nass.usda.gov.
