Join us January 15th as we discuss how to use data to make a local impact. The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Research to Reality January cyber-seminarwill highlight State Cancer Profiles. This resource is part of Cancer Control P.L.A.N.E.T. and is supported by the NCI and CDC. The State Cancer Profiles Web site provides a system to identify the cancer burden in a standardized manner in order to motivate action, integrate surveillance into cancer control planning, and expose health disparities. The available Interactive graphics and maps provide visual support for deciding where to focus cancer control efforts. Antoinette Percy-Laurry will provide an overview of the tool, highlight recently added features and measures, and describe how the tool can be used by cancer control researchers and practitioners.
We will also be joined by Amanda Raftery and Wendy Noe who will share Indiana’s experience in using State Cancer Profiles at the state and local levels. The data from the tool was used to inform the development and implementation of cancer control plans and programs. Ms. Noe’s and Ms. Raftery’s presentations provide a practical example of how the tool could be applied in your own state, community, or organizational planning and implementation efforts.

- Understand how State Cancer Profiles data and resources could be used to inform cancer control planning at a national, state, and local level.
- Describe one example of how a state and local coalition have used the tool in their communities.

To Roger: The Cancer Knowledge information comes from the HINTS survey. HINTS has a stand-alone website, http://hints.cancer.gov/ , and information about the estimates and methodology can be found there. The HINTS data and maps were integrated into State Cancer profiles to provide data about the American public’s access and use of cancer-related information and aid cancer control planners in directing local cancer communication efforts or other methods of intervention.
To David: Yes, the screening and risk factors data are self-reported mostly from the latest Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance Survey, the Tobacco Use Supplement of the Current Population Survey and the National Health Interview Survey. Self-reported data through surveys are designed to provide cross-sectional national estimates. While advances in electronic heath records may provide some information quicker, specific topics and questions
To Pem: The State Cancer Profiles website has only state level data for breast cancer prevalence. Statistical modeling is needed to create these prevalence data. State level data will be available soon for all cancer sites. However, there are currently no plans for county level prevalence data.
The website has county level data for screening variables, mammography, pap smear, current or ever smoker. Efforts are underway to provide county level screening data for the other screening variables. The date is not yet known.
