Special Direct Consolidation Loans help eligible borrowers manage their debt by having all of their federal loans serviced by the same entity, resulting in one bill and one payment.

The deadline for applying for a Special Consolidation Loan was June 30, 2012. As a result, applications are no longer being accepted for this special opportunity.

Special Consolidation Loans

Earlier this year, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) offered Special Direct Consolidation Loans to eligible borrowers with

  • at least one student loan held by ED—a Direct Loan or a Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program loan owned by ED and serviced by one of ED’s servicers—and
  • at least one commercially-held FFEL Program loan (a FFEL Program loan that is owned by a FFEL lender and serviced either by that lender or by a servicer contracted by that lender).

Please visit our Consolidation page if you are interested in learning about other options for combining your federal student loans. If you have already applied for a Special Direct Consolidation Loan and have questions, please visit the Student Loans website or contact your loan servicer
