Federal Register and FR Notices

What is the Federal Register?

The FR is the official daily publication for agency rules, proposed rules, and notices of Federal agencies and organizations, as well as for Executive Orders and other presidential documents.

What types of documents does IA publish in the Federal Register?

IA publishes proposed and final rules in the Federal Register, as well as numerous types of notices. Among the notices IA publishes are: notices of tribal liquor ordinances, reservation proclamations, notices of intent and notices of availability of National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, information collection notices, Federal acknowledgment proposed findings and final determinations, Indian irrigation rate adjustments, notices of approved Tribal-State Class III gaming compacts, grant solicitations, and meeting announcements.

An often-requested FR notice that is published each year is the notice of Indian Entities Recognized and Eligible to Receive Services from the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs. The current version can be found here: Federal Register Listing of 564 tribes - 2010. A Supplement was published 10/27/10 and can be found here:  Supplement - FR Listing of 565 tribes - 2010.

What is IA’s process for publishing in the Federal Register?

Before IA publishes a document in the FR, it must undergo several layers of approval within the Department. For an overview of IA's FR publication process, please click here:  How to Publish a Notice in the Federal Register.

Additional IA guidance on the preparation and clearance of FR notices, including an overview of the process and roles/responsibility of programs and others, is under development and will be available in the near future.
