• Supports research in neural circuit analysis, synaptic transmission, synaptic plasticity, structural analysis of neuronal membrane proteins, channelopathies, and epilepsy
• Supports basic and translational research, as well as clinical trials, and facilitates multidisciplinary collaborations

• Supports research in stroke, multiple sclerosis, CNS and PNS tumors, neuro-AIDS, prion diseases, CNS infections, tuberous sclerosis, and neurofibromatosis
• Supports several areas of basic neuroscience research including: glial cell biology, neuroimmunology, neurovirology, neural vascular biology, the blood brain barrier, and apoptosis
• Portfolio spans basic and translational research, and some clinical trials

• Supports research in neuronal cell death, how protein aggregation damages neurons, and the interaction of genes and the environment in the etiology of neurodegenerative diseases
• Portfolio consists of research on adult onset neurodegenerative diseases of all types, including Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, and Huntington's Disease, broadly focusing on pathogenesis, treatment and prevention

• Supports research of genes that cause neurological disorders, including molecular mechanisms through which genes act, animal models, and in vitro techniques
• Promotes development of gene-based therapeutics for neurological disorders and pharmaceuticals targeted to specific gene products
• Develops resources for neurogenetics research, such as tissue and information registries, atlases of gene expression and function, and mutagenesis and phenotyping methodologies

• Supports research to understand degeneration, plasticity, and repair following injury to the nervous system (e.g. spinal cord injury or traumatic brain injury) and promotes research to improve functional outcome
• Promotes research in endogenous neurogenesis as well as stem and progenitor cell biology in the development and repair of the nervous system
• Supports neuroengineering and the development of neural prosthetic devices designed to restore function after neurological injury or disease

• Supports research focused on higher brain functions that underlie complex behavioral phenomena such as learning, memory, attention, language, cognition, emotion, movement, the wakefulness-sleep cycle, response to pain, and feeding
• Funded research involves human or animal subjects and employs advanced methods of neuroscience which are used to measure brain structure and function as well as neural activity associated with specific cognitive and behavioral processes

• Consultation in the development of clinical trial applications
• Monitoring the progress of the trials
• Participating in the ongoing management
• Ensuring the safety of trial participants

• Supports the coordination and development of programs and initiatives that foster international research, training and collaborations that are relevant to the institute's mission

• Plans, coordinates and directs programs that increase research faculty development, improve research infrastructure, and promote innovative approaches to enhance diversity through partnership with academic research institutions and diverse communities

• Supports preclinical research & development through Investigational New Drug (IND) and Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) applications to the FDA
• Supports the design, implementation, and management of research infrastructure activities that apply advanced research technologies to problems in neuroscience and neurology
• Supports translational research projects and networks

• Design and oversee NINDS grant programs to support training and career development of investigators at all career levels who have research interests in line with the mission of the Institute
• Provide technical expertise and advice to the extramural community regarding program policies and procedures, funding opportunities and the NIH review process
• Oversees all NINDS institutional training programs
