Frequently Asked Questions for the Multiscale Modeling (MSM)Consortium
What is the MSM Consortium?
- The MSM Consortium is a group of researchers interested in the activities that promote the MSM Mission.
- The MSM is comprised of PI’s and key investigators involved in research projects focused on or related to multiscale modeling of biomedical, biological and behavioral systems. (IMAG is comprised of government program officers running or representing the programs supporting these projects)
- The MSM activities are determined by the participants of the MSM and conducted for the benefit of the participants. (IMAG participants are around to facilitate activities if needed.)
Why should I join the MSM Consortium?
The Consortium will provide various opportunities to:
- network with other MSM investigators, MSM Participants and Projects
- easily converse with program officers from nine government agencies, IMAG Participants, from the United States and Canada
- participate in focused Working Group discussions on the wiki
- participate in virtual scientific presentations by all Working Groups throughout the year
- participate in annual meetings of the MSM Consortium, IMAG/MSM Events
- learn about the latest modeling and MSM related activities from around the world, Multiscale Modeling of the Physiome - Projects Around the World
- access various Resources for Modeling
What do I need to do to be part of the Consortium?
MSM Consortium participants follow the MSM Guidelines for Participation.

What are the Working Groups?
- The Working Group (WG) structure was created by the original set of MSM grantees (in 2006) as a means to discuss important and focused issues concerning multiscale modeling. The WG’s undergo an evolution after each annual MSM meeting (change in focus, change in WG co-leads).
- The WG co-leads help organize the working group by – 1) stimulating discussion and creating a collaborative discussion environment for all WG participants; 2) bringing in participants from the MSM as well as non-MSM participants from the research community (outside participants can also join a WG voluntarily without joining the MSM); 2) keeping their own WG list updated and keeping WG participants appraised of WG, MSM and IMAG discussions (i.e. not all WG participants are on the MSM listserv); 3) serving as the WG spokespersons to IMAG.
- Participants in the WG will help decide on the WG title, goals, and objectives (e.g. 2 all MSM presentations, white papers, workshops, publications) for this year. As suggested during the MSM meeting, each WG will come up with current state of the art in the specified topic, challenges and opportunities.
What do I need to know to be a WG Lead?
- You are welcome to bring in MSM and non-MSM participants to your WG. MSM participants are listed on the wiki, http://www.imagwiki.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=Listing_of_MSM_Participants and are on the MSM listserv IMAG_MSM@list.nih.gov, which you can write to at any time. Non-MSM participant can added to your own email lists and depend on you to be informed of general MSM activities.
- Since non-MSM participants come to the WGs through you, they are not given IMAG wiki logins. If you feel a participant of your WG would benefit from having their own wiki login (e.g. constantly emailing you with things to post), please inform Stephanie Sabourin, Stephanie.sabourin@nih.gov.
- Each WG is asked to host 2 scientific presentations to IMAG and the MSM pertaining to your working group focus. Please sign up here, http://www.imagwiki.org/mediawiki/index.php?title=WG_Presentation_Schedule. Stephanie and I will help organize the virtual presentation medium (phone, webconference).
- Participants in the WG will help decide on the WG title, goals, and objectives (e.g. 2 all MSM presentations, white papers, workshops, publications) for this year. Please let us know when this is complete.
- The activities of the WG should not be someone’s personal agenda, but a group effort.
- Each WG will post on the WG wiki page current state of the art in the specified topic, challenges and opportunities.
- All WG leads (or designated representatives from the WG) will meet with IMAG on a quarterly basis to discuss Consortium issues and help plan the next year’s MSM Consortium meeting.
