Maldives FlagIn 2008, Maldives completed four years of work to rewrite its constitution, introduced a multi-party system, and conducted national elections.  The country also ratified its first Employment Act including tourist sector employees, on October 13, 2008.  Maldives, a U.N. member, joined the International Labor Organization on December 4, 2008.  Maldives was suspended from GSP eligibility in 1995 (as part of the 1993 GSP Annual Review), in response to a petition by the AFL-CIO.

The new government has stated that it is "keen to work with investors in developing innovative approaches to FDI projects," and called for a "stable and favorable foundation for businesses through the development of a strong trade regime and associated trade policy frameworks."  U.S. exports to Maldives have doubled from $9.3 million in 2005 to $19.3 million in 2008.
